Ecowaste Industries Ltd Purchases Urban Wood Waste and Smithers Enterprises

Categories:

Ecowaste Industries Ltd. (Ecowaste) is pleased to announce the acquisition of the operating assets of Urban Wood Recycling (Urban) and Smithers Enterprises (Smithers) facilities.  The transaction was approved by both parties on November 21, 2018 and the sale will close on December 31, 2018.

In the coming weeks Urban and Smithers will continue to operate these two facilities in New Westminster and South Vancouver.  They plan to accept customers until December 27 2018, at which time they expect to close both sites to inbound materials to facilitate their shutdown and clean-up process.  After that date Ecowaste will accept Urban and Smithers customers at the Ecowaste Landfill.  Between now and the second week in December Ecowaste will be in touch with existing Urban and Smither’s customers and service providers to discuss the particulars of the transition.

In January of 2019, Ecowaste will start the redevelopment of the New Westminster operation into a C&D transfer station.  Ecowaste expects to reopen the New Westminster Transfer Station in the second quarter of 2019 after the conversion is complete.  The combination of a transfer operation in New Westminster, with additional C&D processing capacity at our Richmond site, will better serve the recycling needs of the construction and demolition sector.

Concurrent with this transaction, Ecowaste has completed the design of a fully automated materials recovery facility (MRF) that will process the majority of the C&D materials received at our sites.  The first phase of the MRF will be operational for processing wood only in Q3 of 2019.  The plan is to have the MRF fully operational by Q4 of 2020.

Ecowaste looks forward to building our C&D recycling capacity and, coupled with our already high standards for management of C&D refuse, hope to raise the bar to a new level in our recycling capabilities over the coming year.

Construction & Demolition Volume Restrictions in Effect July 1 2017

Categories:

June 21, 2017

To our Valued Customers:

ECOWASTE VOLUME RESTRICTIONS IN 2017

This is to inform you of volume restrictions on receipt of construction and demolition materials delivered to Ecowaste Landfill starting July 1, 2017.  Please note, these restrictions do not affect recycling materials like concrete, clean asphalt shingles, clean and select wood, yard waste, or to approved soils.

Our application to the Ministry of Environment to increase our annual permitted tonnage is still in progress and it appears we will not receive the requested increase in our annual permitted tonnage until later in 2017.  As you may be aware we relaxed the volume restrictions we had in place in 2016 at the beginning of 2017 and have not required restrictions to date this year.  However, in the last two months volumes have increased again and we are currently tracking at our annual limit.  In addition, the Vancouver Landfill is terminating their acceptance of ‘demo garbage’ effective July 15, 2017.  This action by the Vancouver Landfill is likely to add additional volume to Ecowaste, which will cause us to exceed our annual volume cap.

As such, we are placing restrictions on our largest customers, and capping all other customers to a maximum volume of 100 tonnes per month.  If your company has not already received an email indicating a specific monthly tonnage limit you will be restricted to the 100 tonne per month limit.

No increase in tipping fees is planned now but may be contemplated later in the year.

We appreciate your continued support of our business and look forward to continuing to provide you with an efficient service that supports the service you provide to your customers.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at (604) 276-1202.

Yours truly,

Ecowaste Landfill will be maintaining pricing in 2017 at 2016 rates for most products.  The rate table below outlines the rates for the major product groups.

We are still working with the Ministry of Environment to complete the update to our annual tonnage increase request.  We hope to have this process completed in the early part of 2017.  In anticipation of this increase, while still not accepting construction and demolition refuse from out-of-region, we have eased the restriction for our larger in- region customers.  If you have any questions about tonnage limits or materials restrictions please contact us at (604) 276-9511.

Ecowaste Landfill Increases Prices and Restricts Inbound C&D Tonnage

Categories:

Starting May 1 2016 Ecowaste Landfill is restricting inbound Construction and Demolition (C&D) materials to remain within its annual capacity limits.  In addition, prices are increasing July 1 and the Volume Incentive Program (VIP) is being adjusted at that time as well.

Due to the unusually high volume of C&D materials arriving at the Ecowaste Landfill this year we forecast we will reach our annual limit in August.  To ensure the annual capacity is not reached before the end of 2016 disposal restrictions (caps) are being placed on our larger customers and new customers are not being accepted.  Effective June 1  and until further notice, Ecowaste will be closed on Sunday’s, and will only be receiving large commercial vehicles (i.e. demolition trailers and roll-off trucks) during regular business hours from Monday to Friday.   Please note the caps and volume restrictions do not apply towards soils or materials that are being recycled (clean and select wood, concrete, asphalt shingles, yard waste).

Prices are being adjusted July 1 to be closer to other market disposal rates for both large commercial customers as well as smaller residential and contract customers.  The new rates are increasing from $86.43 per tonne to $93.00 per tonne for large commercial customers, and the small contractor and residential rate is increasing from $96.43 per tonne to $110.00 per tonne.

In addition, for larger volume customers the VIP program is being adjusted as shown in the table below:

VIP Discount Levels
Current New
Range (tonnes) Discount Discount Range (tonnes)
120 – 360 5% 5% 250 – 500
360 – 600 8% 8% 500 – 1000
600 – 1200 12% 12% >1000 to cap
1200 – 1800 16% N/A
>1800 20% N/A

Ecowaste has made application to the Ministry of Environment for an increase in annual capacity, and other amendments to its Operational Certificate (OC) related to the long-term operation of the facility.  This is a complicated and lengthy process that may not conclude in 2016.  Therefore, it is important to take steps now to ensure the facility can remain open for the entire year.

The capacity restrictions will be in effect until such time as the Ministry approves the OC amendment.  Ecowaste reserves the right to make further adjustments to inbound caps and rates to ensure we remain in compliance with current limits.

If you have a large volume of material, or are bidding on demolition jobs, please contact us in advance to determine if we will be able to accommodate your project.
