FAQ

What is Ecowaste?

Ecowaste is a Canadian, family-owned business that has over 50 years of experience in providing waste recycling and disposal services for construction and demolition materials in Metro Vancouver.

Where is Ecowaste?

Ecowaste is located on 60 hectares (148 acres) on southeastern Lulu Island in Richmond, B.C

What kinds of waste does Ecowaste accept?

Ecowaste operates Metro Vancouver’s only dedicated construction and demolition waste and recycling centre. We also only accept non-household inert materials, mainly from home-building activities. We recycle a number of waste streams, including yard waste, cardboard, metals, brick, clean wood, concrete and clean asphalt shingles.

Who can access Ecowaste?

Ecowaste accommodates large-scale construction customers and smaller, individual DIY projects, primarily from the Richmond area. We have a public drop-off area in Richmond.

How much of the construction and demolition waste received at Ecowaste is recycled?

We recycle approximately one-third of the materials we receive. Since 2018, we’ve invested $15 million in our operations to significantly increase concrete and wood waste recycling and are committed to further investments in equipment and facilities that will allow us to double the rate of recycling.

What products are made from the recycled construction and demolition waste?

Some examples of recycled products are wood biomass, compost and concrete aggregate for construction. Asphalt, tile and brick are used for road construction and recycled wood provides fuel for local manufacturers and district energy producers.

What happens to waste that can’t be recycled?

Ecowaste is one of only two operating landfills in Metro Vancouver. Materials that cannot be recycled are disposed of safely in our landfill.

Is Ecowaste on farmland?

The Ecowaste recycling facility and landfill are located on property that has never been farmed and is not within the Agricultural Land Reserve.
